“The light that creates the work”
Marco Angelini, a contemporary Italian artist, delves into the relationship between light and matter through his abstract works. His creative process draws inspiration from a rich historical and scientific tradition, mainly focusing on how humans perceive light. In Angelini’s work, light transcends its role as a mere tool of expression; it becomes an active, dynamic force that engages viewers in a deep, reflective visual experience, shaping and transforming the reality it represents. Here, light functions spiritually, inviting contemplation on the essence of existence, the boundaries of perception, and the nature of time.
Angelini is inspired by ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Plato and medieval thinkers such as Robert Grosseteste (c. 1168 – 1253), who sought to unravel the mysteries of light and vision. For these thinkers, light was both a physical and a metaphysical phenomenon — a creative force that shaped the universe.
In his artistic exploration, Angelini treats light as a force that not only passes through his work but also actively shapes its structure. His use of light is dynamic: it expands, multiplies, and gives form, embodying the principle of “hoc opus facit” — “this light creates the work.” By drawing on humanity’s historical fascination with the “magical” qualities of light and modern understandings of its dual nature as both wave and particle, Angelini demonstrates how light creates depth, movement, and structure within the painted space.
Angelini also incorporates the groundbreaking scientific theories of the 20th century, such as Planck’s quantum theory and Einstein's theory of relativity, which forever changed our understanding of light, time, and space. His works become a kind of map tracing the propagation of light, where matter and energy intertwine like threads on a canvas, creating a three-dimensional drawing within a two-dimensional space.
Using a wide range of materials — acrylics, adhesives, threads, gold and silver leaf, copper plates, and even photovoltaic cells— Angelini manipulates light, creating visual effects that shift depending on the observer’s angle, the intensity of light, and the surrounding environment. This gives his works multiple layers of meaning and invites viewers to reflect on how light shapes our perception of reality.
In Angelini’s creations, light serves not only as a physical element but as a symbol of growing knowledge and ecological awareness, aligned with the principles of a circular economy. Using light as a metaphor for the future, his work delivers a message of optimism and harmony between humanity and the environment, highlighting the tension between modernity and sustainability.
As light enriches space with meaning, Angelini’s art becomes a vehicle for envisioning continuous improvement. Through his daily dedication, we glimpse a future where light — an energy source and a symbol of enlightenment — guides our civilization towards more excellent balance and responsibility. His works invite us to meditate on light, time, and space, pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional painting and expanding the horizons of contemporary abstract art. Ultimately, they celebrate light as a visual element and a profound symbol of an enlightened future that embraces both the individual and the global community.
